About Us

Know Your Fish (KYF) is a voluntary initiative that works towards an ocean-friendly lifestyle. We encourage and empower consumers to eat seafood responsibly. We do this by providing informed choices that are based on a compilation of decades of marine research.

Addressing the issue of overfishing requires action from multiple fronts. In this collective effort, initiatives like KYF have a unique place. Such initiatives can sensitise people, build a “human constituency” for marine ecosystems and if a majority of seafood consumers follow such initiatives, they can impact the demand. However initiatives like KYF are not silver bullets or substitutes for direct action like changing fisheries policy, devising regulations, modifying technology and addressing societal issues (like social equity).

As a team of researchers who love the ocean, marine life and seafood we want to help anyone who loves seafood make their choices sensitive to our oceans and people.

Know Your Fish recommendations have emerged from the following values we believe in

  1. Conservation of non-human life forms should be an important societal goal.

  2. This can be best achieved when each of us makes conservation a part of our lifestyle; because this approach optimises human and non-human wellbeing.

  3. As people who value conservation as a morality and use tools like science, it is our responsibility to make this information available to everyone in the most accessible form.

  • Retaining intellectual and procedural independence - We do not change our core philosophies and policies  to meet requirements of our donors or our partners.

  • Embracing criticism - As a team we are open to criticism and suggestions from anyone. We will address all the comments and suggestions to the best of our capacity and knowledge.

  • Transparency in communication- All our data and the logic used in our recommendations will always be available for scrutiny and in the public domain.

  • Honesty in communication- We comment on fish and fisheries to the best of our knowledge. We never exaggerate or underplay a situation to marine conservation and fisheries.

  • We are transparent about our failures and constantly learn from them.

It is very difficult to define “team - Know Your Fish”. This is because our co-founders have taken help from every person who heard about Know Your Fish and offered help! Here we have listed some individuals and institutions (in no particular order) who have been instrumental in making Know Your Fish possible.
